Why use a professional for tree surgery and what can go wrong if you do it yourself?
Tree surgery (tree work / arboriculture) requires a high degree of competence, training and experience. For that reason should only be carried out by qualified arborists. Incompetent tree work is not only detrimental to the trees’ appearance but to its health, thus creating a risk to the public and property surrounding the tree.
A skilled tree surgeon is able to offer a wide range of services that will be carefully tailored to the needs of your tree. It is important to make sure any tree surgeon you may employ is both qualified and adequately insured. Jake Garden Care ensures that all staff are NPTC qualified, and we are covered by £5 million public liability insurance.
Stump Removal & Eco-Plugging
There are various ways to get rid of unwanted tree stumps. One of the most effective is the use of eco-plugs. Small holes are drilled into the circumference of a stump, eco-plugs are then hammered into the hole. A chemical is released into the stump, killing only the stump and not causing harm to any surrounding vegetation.
For larger stumps that may take a long time to die, stump-grinding could be the most effective way to treat. These machines will mechanically grind at the stump and root system, leaving fine sawdust. Stump-grinders are potentially hazardous and must only be used by trained operatives. Depending on the size of the stump you may need to grind quite deep into the ground to remove the whole root system, and for this reason it is vital that the operative is made aware of any underground pipes or cables on arrival to site. While some roots may still remain they should rot down in a short space of time.
Tree Preservation Orders
A Tree Preservation Order is an order made by a local planning authority to protect a specific tree or group of trees from harm. If your trees are subject to a Preservation Order, or indeed within a Conservation Area, you will need to seek permission from the local authority before any tree surgery work can be carried out on them. These orders are not to be ignored; you could be fined up to £20,000 for doing so. Jake Garden Care can check protection measures with local planning authorities on your behalf and seek the necessary permissions for work.
